Abstract:

Papers relating to the administration of the Provincias Internas (principally in Nueva Vizcaya and Coahuila) under Commandant General Croix, primarily concerning Indian disturbances and finances. Includes information on many Lipan and Mescalero leaders.
Folder 1. Two letters, April 1 and 4, 1778, from Commandant-Inspector José F. Rubio, concerning negotiations with the Apaches and other matters, notably the pending trial of the apostate Indian Apodaca. 5 p.
Folder 2. File of official documents, 1778-1784, on the plan of Croix and a Chihuahua war council for payment of annual presidio allotments and costs of missionary synods in coins received by the local excise offices, with a view to facilitating circulation of new coinage and suppression of the old. 70 p. Copy.
Folder 3. Accounts of presidio and other funds, rendered to Croix by Manuel Antonio de Escorza, Treasurer of Chihuahua. 1779. 39 p. D.S.
Folder 4. Outline, by Croix, of a round-trip route and time-schedule for a new monthly mail service from Bahía del Espíritu Santo, Texas, to Arispe, Sonora. Followed by similar directions for the communications between certain Nueva Vizcaya presidios and others of the north. February 15, 1779. 9 p.
Folder 5. Letters addressed to Croix by Juan de Ugalde, Governor of Coahuila, concerning orders from the former on relations with the Lipan and Mescalero Indians. Also transmitting copies of papers received from Captain Rafael Martínez Pacheco, Commandant of the Valle de Santa Rosa garrison, relating to doubtful peace offers from the Mescaleros. 1779. 34 p.
